What You Can Do To Stop Snoring
Article Source: HealthSnare.com
Snoring can be approached in many ways. Some are simple and easy and some are not. There are old remedies that work, but if you prefer, modern medical treatments are also available.
The first two things you should do are changing your diet and your sleeping position. Sleeping on your back actually encourages the soft palate to relax, which can obstruct the airway and lead to snoring.
By training yourself to sleep on your side, you can sometimes eliminate this particular reason for snoring. Old timers used a tennis ball to fix this problem.
Insert a tennis ball into a sock and attach it to the back of your pajamas with a safety pin. Your body will learn how to remain on the side rather than sleeping over a tennis ball. Once your body is trained, the tennis ball is no longer necessary.
Some people also benefit from raising the head of the bed about four inches. Place some rolled towels beneath the mattress. This usually helps with breathing and allows the tongue and jaw to slide forward.
Smoking is not to your advantage, so you should quit or reduce the amount of cigarettes you smoke. Try to also avoid second-hand smoke. In some lines of work, this is more difficult than others. However, the less you're exposed to smoke or second-hand smoke, the more relief you'll have from snoring.
Of course, not everyone has the same faith in home remedies - and some have a different or more severe cause for their snoring. There is no treatment that's one size fits all (if that were the case there wouldn't be so many treatments).
Nasal strips have become increasingly popular in the treatment of snoring. In addition to the nasal strips, some manufacturers of snoring products also have a spray for the back of the throat. It would be a good idea to try these products before you give up on this option.
If these things aren't working for your snoring problems or those of your partner, you have a more serious problem - such as sleep apnea. Your doctor can direct you to the use of oral appliances and facial masks that can help some cases.
If sleep apnea is a possibility in your case, don't delay seeking medical advice. This is a potentially life threatening illness that should not be ignored. Snoring can be treated and it should have to ruin your social life. With just a little effort, you can turn things around and stop snoring.
