New breakthroughs in medicine continue to be made as we gain further understanding of the body at the most basic molecular and cellular level. One of the areas that has benefited from much research is reproductive technologies. Better diagnostic tools, medications and treatment therapies are giving many renewed hope of starting a family. Today, many of the obstacles to conception once considered medically insurmountable are regularly and successfully treated at fertility clinics with advanced reproductive technologies.
Fertility Drugs
One of the most common and most successful treatments for women with fertility problems caused by ovulation disorders are medications. Three of four couples that come to a fertility clinic are eventually able to conceive with fertility drugs such as Clomid. New medications can stimulate ovulation by tricking the brain into thinking that the level of estrogen is too low, and encourage follicle growth. These medications are usually used in conjunction with other therapies.
Frozen Donated Eggs
While it has been possible for some time to used donor eggs, it is only within the last decade that it has been possible for fertility clinics to use frozen donor eggs. For women who want to preserve their eggs for a later time or ones who will undergo cancer treatments, this new technology is giving them opportunity to experience pregnancy and complete their family they may not have been possible otherwise.
Ovarian Tissue Freezing
Ovarian tissue freezing is an exciting new treatment, not yet offered at all fertility clinics. The procedure requires that a small amount of ovarian tissue is obtained from the patient and frozen. It is then transplanted back to the patient and ovarian function is restored. This is an exciting option for patients who might soon undergo radiation or chemotherapy. Since the procedure is so new, and because by the nature of the procedure which is delayed for the patient, the success rates are not yet clear. However, initial results are very positive.
Overcoming Unexplained Infertility
Nowhere are medical advances more evident than in overcoming unexplained infertility. With the astounding progression of In vitro fertilization and the related procedures available at most fertility clinics, women are regularly enjoying healthy pregnancies. Research and innovations in infertility, embryology and endocrinology have, in countless cases, helped to overcome difficult or unexplained infertility issues.
Fertility Preservation
The advance of medicine has led to new hope in many areas. Once, most cancers had a very low survival rate. Today, as more people survive cancer, patients have hope for a future, and want to plan for it. Preserving eggs and sperm long term is now possible, and giving many cancer survivors a new hope for a future family.
The last decade alone has brought an astounding number of new advances in reproductive medicine. As worldwide research continues and advances implemented at local fertility clinics, couples can expect to see numerous options open up to them.
