Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Some of the common myths linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.
Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by individuals who have seen it working on subjects. They believe that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally tough and are trying their best to block the spell.
Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is totally aware of his surroundings. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of attentiveness, and this heightened awareness helps the subject to absorb new inputs with considerable ease.
Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of the population is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have come up with this low percentage because they have used the identical hypnosis technique on all people without focusing on their individual traits. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different people come under different personality types, and hence respond to different methods.
People also tend to connect hypnosis with meditation. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any communication involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. The person doesn't communicate to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is impossible without communication.
A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about changes in one's looks and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
