This lady executive expected to hear mumbling from time to time a medical condition caused her to lose hearing in her left ear. Only when she found she could barely make out what others were saying did she think of asking for help. A manager of a popular park, this woman became among the first to be part of the Central Institute for the Deaf's mouth lip reading program. Older executives who still have much to do in their working lives but are suffering from hearing loss due to age can benefit from this program.
As you age, you lose the ability to translate sound that a person can still hear, but they can't understand what others are saying, said an audiologist who helps run the lip reading program. For the lady executive, whose hearing in her right ear was unaffected, the program was a form of preventive maintenance. People's careers often depend on interpreting and communicating spoken language. To provide more one on one attention, each one hour class for the week in a span of four weeks will have a maximum of four students.
Videos are shown to those attending the class so that they improve on their lip reading skills. Viewers of the video attempt to decipher what is being mouthed by the woman whose face remains expressionless. Some do whatever she does on the screen to figure out the words. In situations where students don't know the answer, they can ask for a clue or request for the sentence to be rephrased. Knowing these tricks would help you in lip reading.
When sounds aren't processed correctly by the inner ear, it indicates the start of age related hearing loss or presbycusis. High pitched sounds are the first ones lost by people with this condition. They would then increase the volume of the TV, insisting that the people are just mumbling. According to her, a hearing aid wouldn't much benefit a person with presbycusis.
Difficulties would arise especially in situations with lot of noise in the background, such as parties. They start becoming depressed loners since they feel that they can't compete against those younger than them.
Society is getting filled up with more and more noise. Even young ones are not spared from hearing loss because of the constant amount of noise surround us. Over 25 million Americans suffer some kind of hearing impairment, making it the country's number one disability. Hearing loss becomes permanent for one of every four adults who reach the age of 66.
This institute desires that the word of mouth program will steer people toward lives that are happier and more fulfilling. People feel that they are more perceptive and more youthful because they took focused communication training. Participants in the program are motivated to enhance their lip reading skills even among their family and friends. There are those who keep the TV muted while they watch.
Four weeks is too short to make them great lip readers. They will realize that lip reading is actually difficult and that they have to combine it with other methods still. The second half of the class is given to lessons on strategies for hearing improvement.
For a seminar, it is recommended that an executive call up and make reservations for a front row seat. People will connect your reservation to status reasons and nothing else. Accomodating more people from all over the country and starting an intensive weekend session are among what these institutes want to achieve next.
