Foods to Avoid With Oral Herpes Cold Sores
Foods to avoid with cold sores are high in arginine and have low amounts of lysine. These foods feed cold sore activity. In a couple minutes you will know the key foods that have a big effect on your cold sores - and a great cold sore treatment you can begin using today.
Arginine and lysine are two amino acids that are present in most foods. These proteins affect the duration and frequency of your cold sores.
But first you must know this.
The herpes simplex virus is the basic cause of all oral herpes cold sores. This microscopic virus particle will enter a nerve cell and force it to create new copies of itself. It will then demolish the cell to release the cloned virus. This creates a huge open weeping ulcer called a cold sore.
The main protein the cell uses to create new oral herpes virus is arginine. Your cells have special receptor areas used to store arginine.
Your cells also store lysine in the same area. Your cells will not be able to create new herpes virus with lysine protein. This is a cold sore treatment used by many.
The more lysine in your diet the less arginine can be stored in your cells. The "parent" virus will sense a shortage of arginine immediately and avoid those cells.
Whenever your cells have a higher lysine than arginine content, it prevents creation of new virus. This not only prevents a cold sore but sends the herpes simplex virus back into hibernation.
Here are simple foods to avoid with cold sores. These foods have been proven to contain high amounts of arginine.
- Chocolate (my favorite)
- Tree nuts and soil-grown peanuts
- Seeds like sunflower, sesame and flax
- Shellfish - especially oysters and clams
- Grains such as wheat, barley and oats
- Most vegetables are OK but avoid rutabagas, carrots, corn and squash
Avoiding certain foods can be difficult. In fact, it may actually be unhealthy. Some foods above are very important for your health. Quite likely you could go a week or so without them during the cold sore event without harm.
But, it would be wise not avoid these foods for more than a couple weeks.
And now you do not have to.
Just increase your intake of lysine during the oral herpes cold sore event and it will force the arginine out of your cells.
Here are a few foods that are high in lysine. These can be used to balance out the high arginine foods in your diet.
Fish (especially flounder), chicken, eggs (the perfect food), apples, and dairy products. Cheese and yogurt, in particular, are rich in lysine and a good cold sore treatment.
You may find following a special diet is inconvenient for you. Fact is, I have not kept these diet guidelines very good myself.
