Beneficial Health Insurance in Florida
Article Source: HealthSnare.com
Close to a quarter of Florida locals who are not entitled to Medicare have no health insurance at all. That makes Florida second nationwide (Texas is the worst) for failing to assist its citizens in obtaining dependable medical care, and Florida hospitals bear the brunt of it as the situation worsens.
This shortage of insurance coverage has an effect on the hospitals treating the uninsured, on hospital emergency units and, most drastically, on in patient care. Based on studies from Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the lack of health insurance may have precipitated the death of tens of thousands of children admitted to U.S. hospitals.
These experts pored over nearly 23 million hospital records accumulated from 37 states between 1988 and 2005. All elements being the same, they concluded that uninsured children were 60% closer to death in the hospital than those covered by health insurance. The uninsured kids were in more danger no matter what their medical conditions.
While this does not even count the deaths of the children who never made it to the hospital or those made to leave the hospital prematurely, it does illustrate that not providing children with health insurance may have caused close to 17,000 deaths in a few decades.
In Florida, the number of children placed into this perilous scenario is increasing. As many as 797,000 children (that's one in six) may be put in such a deadly predicament until they are given health insurance coverage in Florida.
As ludicrous as it appears, in the U.S., "If you are a child without insurance, if you're seriously ill and end up in the hospital, you are 60% more likely to die than the sick child in the next room who has insurance", according to Fizan Abdullah, M.D., Ph.D., a pediatric surgeon at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital.
As of September 23, 2010, insurers will no longer be allowed to cancel insurance policies when people get sick, unless the insurer can prove fraud on the part of the insured. Florida health insurance plans will be subject to internal and external appeals when coverage or claims are denied. That means you will have a right to appeal an insurer's decision directly to the company and through an independent, outside agent. By 2014 when the health exchange becomes available, insurers will no longer be allowed to exclude coverage for known health problems.
Florida Governor Crist made Cover Florida, which was legalized by Congress, in a move to offer cheap health insurance for Florida. This September, federal health care reform will obliterate the prevailing mindset of bias against those who have no health insurance.
Florida would also be able to apply for federal funds to help state officials review excessive premium rate increases on Florida health insurance. Florida will have the power to sanction insurers when premium increases are not justifiable. All of these improvements can help to spread the protection of health insurance to more adults and children.
