Well, your acne problem is under control, but now you have some scars left by the blemishes. You don't like feeling uncomfortable in public. What can you do to get rid of the scars?
You have some options. You may find that some of the options work better than others, but you will have choices, and you may have to do more than one type of treatment. All you can do is see what works for your skin type. When you are looking for cures for acne scarring, though, it's more about improvement than a cure.
There are several types of scars, and the type of scar determines which treatment is appropriate. Skin regeneration is the key to healing because it's the collagen that has been destroyed by the acne that causes the scarring. Ice Pick scars go deep below the epidermal layer of skin. Dermal abrasion techniques don't work well with ice pick scars. Atrophic scars are shallower, going down only a few layers, so microderm and dermal abrasion may work well here. These techniques can also work well with hypertonic scars, which rise above the epidermis. They are often red and puffy.
Microderm abrasion is a chemical peel type of treatment that exfoliates the epidermis. The cells of this top skin layer are removed. This encourages your body to create a new layer of epidermal cells. If your acne was mild, and scars not too deep or plentiful, this method may work quite nicely for you. Microderm abrasion seems to work better in young people than older adults. This is because as you grow older, you produce less collagen, and this method depends on collagen production.
Microderm abrasion treatment does not require a doctor, though you can see one if you like. Or you can see a skin care professional at a spa. There is also the option of using a treat at home kit. In general, this abrasion method is not very expensive, so it is a good treatment to start with. It's also painless. Don't use with ice pick scars, because it doesn't give good results.
With Dermabrasion, the treatment exfoliates the epidermis and several dermis layers as well. This is a doctor required treatment, so you need to make an appointment with a dermatologist. They will put you under anesthesia, most likely, and the doctor will use a burred tool that rotates and exfoliates the skin. You will feel some pain for about a week, and experience redness and swelling. You can put make up over it in about a week, so you can return to work. Again, this method is not suitable for ice pick scarring.
Chemical Peels take the top layer of skin off of your face. There are two that are rather mild. They are Betahydroxy acids and Alphahydroxy acids. In order to have this treatment done, you need to go to a doctor. If you do it yourself and leave the chemicals on too long, they may do serious damage to your face. Thus, the doctor. When you get a chemical peel, you may experience redness, irritation, and crustiness. With a mild peel, though you could be going back to work immediately after the treatment.
You can use a cream to remove acne scars. There are several on the market, and they are affordable. These kits allow for a series of home treatments. Once the treatment starts, you can start growing new skin cells and new collagen so you skin looks smoother and younger.
