Laser Acne Treatments: Are They Right For You?
Article Source: HealthSnare.com
The two main purposes of laser acne treatments in health care are treating acne and improving the appearance of acne scars. Although they're very popular, they are not right for all conditions and can be very expensive. What do you expect from laser acne treatments if you chose them with your dermatologist or doctor?
There are 3 main applications of lasers in the treatment of acne itself.
The first would be to use them in burning away hair follicle. Destroying the follicle will prevent any more acne on that site since most pimples form when sebum clogs up hair follicle. This is good for any area on the face where we do not want hair, but there are a huge number of hair follicles in the skin so it can take a while.
Second would be using them in order to burn away the sebaceous gland where sebum is formed. Many people, especially during young adulthood and adolescence, produce excess sebum so acne can be prevented by removing some of the sebaceous glands. However, there's also the possibility that dry skin can be caused later in life.
Third, the bacteria in an infected pimple can be oxidized. Although the bacteria is killed, it won't prevent other pimples from forming later.
Lasers are also used in the treatment of acne scars, in two different ways. The first one would be laser resurfacing. In order for new and healthy skin to be formed, the middle layer of the skin is tightened while the top and scarred layer is removed. A local anesthetic can be used in a dermatologist's or doctor's office. The procedure can take about an hour but it will depend on the size of the affected area. Skin will take from 3 to 10 days to heal.
Second, there is a new form of acne scar treatment called fractional laser therapy. It doesn't damage the top layer of the skin and it works at a deeper level. It's not usually covered on health insurance and it's an expensive procedure unlike the other laser acne treatments.
