When there is so many orthodontic treatments available, how do you know which one to choose?

Orthodontic problems are very common and most people have a mild orthodontic problem of some kind. In the past, orthodontic treatments were associated with painful looking, bulky train-track braces; however, nowadays there is a huge range of treatments available for patients of all ages.
Examples of common orthodontic problems include poorly positioned teeth, underbite, overbite, crossbite, protruding front teeth (overjet), gaps between the teeth and crowded teeth.
Invisible treatments
One of the most evident drawbacks of wearing a brace is the appearance of the brace; many people with braces feel self-conscious when they have a brace fitted, especially adults, as braces are usually associated with teenagers. Dental companies have taken this into account and a range of much more discreet braces are now available. Popular treatments include the Invisalign invisible brace system, which comprises of a series of plastic, clear aligners which are worn for two weeks and the replaced with the next aligner in the series.
Another popular ‘invisible' treatment is Clearstep braces, which are very similar to Invisalign braces in that the treatment uses a series of clear aligners to move the teeth into the correct position. Clearstep aligners are designed to be as discreet as possible, meaning that nobody else will notice that you are wearing braces. Clearstep is becoming increasingly popular and can be used to treat a range of orthodontic problems; the aligners can also be used to treat patients of all ages.
Quick treatments
As technology has advanced treatment time has decreased significantly and people with minor orthodontic problems can now transform their smile in a matter of weeks. Popular treatments include the Inman aligner, Six Month Smile braces and Invisalign Lite; these treatments are geared towards patients with less complex orthodontic problems which affect their front teeth and can produce results in less than six months.
These orthodontic treatments may not be suitable for everyone; if you have more major orthodontic problems, which require a significant amount of movement, you may be advised to go for a more intensive treatment.
Benefits of treatment
Many people may be worried about the prospect of wearing a brace but having orthodontic treatment will improve your self-confidence and oral health in the long-term; orthodontic problems can cause people to be conscious about the appearance of their teeth, which will affect their behaviour around other people. Many problems also cause oral health issues and can contribute to speech problems and difficulties with eating. The thought of wearing a brace can be daunting but it will produce positive long-term effects, which will far outweigh the disadvantages of having to wear a brace for a year or so.
Getting help
If you are concerned about the appearance of your teeth, talk to your dentist; they will recommend suitable treatments and discuss the details of different treatments with you and then you can decide if you want to go ahead and have the treatment.
