The Wonderful World of Whitening
Article Source: HealthSnare.com
The importance of a gleaming smile full of healthy white teeth is well publicised, from toothpaste adverts to glossy magazines bursting with photographs of Hollywood stars grinning from ear to ear, but it's also well founded. Whether at a job interview, with a client or combined with flirtatious fluttering eyelashes across a bar, we know a smile can make all the difference.
The history of teeth whitening
The process of teeth whitening has existed for over a century, as early as 1877 oxalic acid was being used as a whitening agent, since then technology has improved to such an extent we can now do it in our own homes. There are two main avenues to go down when considering whitening, D.I.Y or the high-tech laser version, and it is simply a case of deciding which method is best suited to you.
Home teeth whitening kits
Home whitening achieves effective results whilst simply watching television or sleeping. There are two types of home whitening methods available, one is simply buying a kit from a high street shop, going home, following the instructions, and waiting for the result, much like hair-dye. The other, also similar to dying hair, just as you would visit a hairdresser to obtain professional results you can visit your dentist for a ‘professional home whitening kit'. The dentist simply takes an impression of your teeth and within about a week you're provided with the mould called ‘whitening tray' to be used with the professional whitening gel provided by the dentist to be used at home. These are slightly more expensive than the high-street alternative but provide greater, longer lasting results.
Laser teeth whitening
The other avenue to venture down is laser whitening. This produces significantly quicker results, in just one hour teeth can appear up to seven or eight times brighter. This involves just one visit to your dentist and after the hygienist's removal of tartar and staining the dentist will coat the teeth in a bleaching agent containing around 20% peroxide, the dentist covers the gums in a protective gel which hardens and a cheek retractor keeps lips and mouth off the surface. Once the whitening gel is applied to the teeth it's activated by laser, the routine is carried out and then all there is to do is compare the ‘before and after' appearance. This can then be combined with a professional home whitening kit for not only instant but long lasting results: leaving us to carry on enjoying our coffee and red wine with a beaming smile.
