Many people suffer in silence when they have crooked teeth. But it doesn't have to be that way. Whether you were born that way, or they have become misshapen over time it is possible to do something about it.
Straightening teeth is no longer a big deal. Nor is there anything to fear. Dental cosmetic techniques are developing constantly, so getting your teeth straightened is becoming easier and quicker than ever.
Numerous techniques available
A number of different techniques are used nowadays to straighten crooked or misshapen teeth. The traditional way is to use fixed orthodontic braces. This uses metal wires which are attached to the front of the teeth via brackets. Orthodontists then gradually tighten these brackets and wires over the period of treatment, which in turn moves the teeth into the required position.
The time it takes for treatment to complete depends on individual circumstances. However it is likely to last months rather than weeks particularly with children.
Another method similar to that outlined above uses Lingual Braces. In this case the wires are fitted to the inside of the teeth so are not visible. However while they may not be a focus for others to look at, the braces are apparently uncomfortable. That said they are very useful for severe cases of crooked teeth.
One of the problems with wearing traditional braces is friction. In recent years a new development that prevents this is the Damon Brace.
Rather than using ‘elastic ties,' Damon Braces use a friction free system which not only creates a more comfortable brace, the treatment time is also reduced to just 4 - 6 months.
Further, the brace does not require constant tightening which can be painful.
Other advantages include the ability to clean teeth without the worry of plaque build up around the brace, something which traditional braces are prone. This ensures better oral hygiene.
The brace itself is also aesthetically pleasing while the material used is resistant to wear and staining.
An alternative to all of the above is Invisalign. As the name suggests it is an invisible brace. Instead of visible wires, a set of what could be described as small gum shields are used. Called aligners, the shields gently move the teeth into position without pain and discomfort.
The invisible brace
The biggest advantage of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable, which makes eating and cleaning teeth much easier.
The system is popular with many adults.
Another system available is the Inman Aligner. This is basically an amalgam between the traditional brace and the Invisalign method.
Although invisible, the technique has a couple of useful advantages over the Invisalign system. First, it is cheaper and second, it is often an even quicker treatment than Invisalign itself since only one device is needed.
Quick braces treatment
If you don't like the idea of wearing a brace for 12 months or more, then a newer system may just be for you. Known as the Six Month Smile, it is effectively a traditional brace but it uses a different mechanism to move the teeth. Traditional braces focus on biting and moving all the teeth; the new technique focuses on moving the teeth seen when you smile.
