Braces Now ‘in Vogue'. No, really...

A survey has revealed that one in five adults feel they need braces. The British Lingual Orthodontic Society who conducted the study say the renewed demand for braces is in part down to the allure of the perfect Hollywood smile. It seems the braces of yesteryear that were feared by self conscious youngsters attracting playground taunts are well and truly in the past. Braces are no longer about a mouthful of metal and train tracks thanks to the increasingly sophisticated alternatives, such as Invisalign (invisible braces).
Trend for Aesthetic Braces
The trend for straight, white teeth is increasing as Britain quickly catches up with their American counterparts. And matched with the development of less invasive, more aesthetic and less visible braces, more people are seeing the appeal of orthodontic work. The Cosmetic Dentistry Guide has tipped orthodontic procedures as one of the top five trends for 2010. And whereas women tend to dominate cosmetic procedures as a whole, the survey found that almost as many men as women felt they would benefit from wearing braces.
Braces Increasingly Accessible
The fact braces are becoming more accessible and affordable as well as less unsightly is also contributing to the growing trend. The train track braces worn by the Ugly Betty character are a thing of the past for those seeking a cosmetic alternative. And you won't have to remortgage your house to benefit from the latest cosmetic braces. According to the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide website: "Invisalign, which had cornered the invisible brace market, now has competition, which means that the price of braces is being driven down and everybody has a chance of getting a perfect smile."
The Tom Cruise Effect
Tom Cruise may have led the way when it comes to adults wearing braces - he had his fitted aged 39. But now you don't have to be a Hollywood star to get Hollywood teeth. The last few decades have seen a seismic shift in attitudes to dentistry in the UK, and specifically in attitudes towards braces. Everyone wants straight, beautiful teeth. And the range of braces and options available means we can find the right fit and look. Some braces are almost unnoticeable, explaining why more adults are happy to come forward and embrace the new trend for braces.
