Braces are increasingly popular amongst adults. The British Orthodontic Society say adults make up half of all patients and braces remain the most popular treatment. The resurgence for braces has been put down to the simple fact that more of us want a beautiful smile. But braces have also become more endemic in popular culture with more people feeling proud to reveal their braces such as the singer Estelle who was happy to be snapped in her braces at London's Glamour Awards.

Like the Americans, Brits have become preoccupied in their quest for a beautiful smile. With today's treatments it's possible to fix teeth discreetly with invisible braces, however many are opting for the ‘Ugly Betty' look with metal ‘train tracks'. Braces work by gently applying pressure on the teeth to move to the correct position and can be worn for a couple of months up to two years. Clear plastic splints can move teeth and fix mildly irregular teeth in as little as 12 weeks, but of course cost more. The kinds of braces and treatment you'll need will depend on the extent of your wonky teeth. A lingual appliance will adjust the teeth using springs and a removable mouth plate that runs at the back of the teeth for a discreet look. Once more, this is a costlier approach to traditional braces as it demands high laboratory costs and expertise but for many, it's a price they're happy to pay.
Embracing Geek Chic
Braces may be undergoing a make-over as the likes of Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie flash brilliant smiles our way. And even the Ugly Betty look is being embraced as hip, despite the fact the actress who plays the role America Ferrera has to ‘work hard' to achieve her ugly on-screen look. Her metal braces and beer-bottle glasses are far removed from the actress's groomed beauty. The attraction of the hit show has been put down to the fact that there are so many glamorous people on TV that the audience instantly warms to Betty who is striving to be glamorous. The reality is, with today's advances in treatments and technology you can wear braces and look chic!
