An Apple 'app' that is good for your teeth
Article Source: HealthSnare.com
An application or "app" about dentistry has been launched for Apple's iphone and ipad. The app is free and can be purchased from the itunes store online before being downloaded to whatever piece of hardware you own.
The programme has been developed by dentist Dr. Marc Lazare, who is based in New York, USA. Some of the information, such as information on dental plans and costs, are only relevant to users in the US, but there are plenty of other facts and figures that are still useful iphone owners in the UK.
What does it have to offer?
There are articles about oral cancer and how to prevent it, gum disease, root canal, and orthodontics. The app expands on alternative dental therapies and how you can treat the most common dental complaints at home, if you are unable to get to a dentist.
For those who like the interactive aspects of the apps, there is a section where you can "Ask the Expert", type in the details of your own particular question and Dr. Lazare will get back to you with an answer. Enjoy the "Fun Facts" and "Myth vs Reality" sections of the app, as well as the more serious, scientific information provided.
What other dentistry-based apps are available?
There are other dentistry-based apps available, including one which allows dentists to speed up the planning process in cosmetic dentistry by scanning in a photograph of the patient's current teeth before calculating each tooth's ideal position. There is even an app that can simulate the effects of teeth whitening, once a photo of the patients smile has been inputted.
Find a local dentist
On a more basic level, there is a UK app that allows you to search for dentists near where you live or work across England. 7,500 surgeries are in the current version, which includes directions to the surgery using GPS. This app costs just 59p and can be updated regularly through the itunes store.
Help for dental phobic patients
For those with a phobia of the dentist, there is an app which provides some helpful tips as to how to calm yourself before and during your time in the chair. There are video clips explaining the process of hypnosis that has been created by one of the UK's top hypnotherapists. It even features calming music and breathing techniques that you can actually listen to while at the dentists.
Finally, there is an innovative app aimed at children which encourages them to brush correctly by giving users a time and motion target; make something as boring as brushing your teeth into a game, and hopefully children will be more interested!
